Adventure is Out There!

My Mom and grandparents gave me my sense of adventure, trying new things, going new places, and being prepared for anything. Ever since I was a young girl, I have loved to travel. Road trips are particularly fun for me. I love to have special snacks, music, the special extras for each person, even the travel clothes. I love the planning, making the entire trip fit together.

Solo trips with my Mom began when I was 13 and have continued most years up until now.  My Mom would pick a place and she would make these trips so special.  It was time that we got to spend just the two of us, shopping at the outlet malls, seeing new sights, or just staring at the ocean.  I love these times, treasure them and love creating more of them.

Getting to make memories and share something that you both love is great. My Mom and I have a thing for giraffes. We love giraffes, in all shapes and sizes. We also love Disney. This led us to have the shared experience of staying at the Savanna View Room at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. You can get up, have your coffee while the giraffes stroll by. This also caused us to seek out other experiences where we could see or interact with the giraffes. We did the Serengeti Safari at Busch Gardens. We got to pet the giraffes, feed them, and one of them licked my hair. It was an amazing experience that we got to share together. We will always remember that and have our love of giraffes.

Another great thing about these trips was the freedom.  My Mom let me stay up later, eat more junk food, and listen to the radio turned up.  I can remember Fox 97, the Oldies Station Blasting.  We always have the best times even now on our trips.  Our last adventure was a Disney Cruise that was incredible.  There was so much to do.  We also got to visit Disney’s Private Island, Castaway Cay.  It was wonderful and so insanely relaxing.

One of our longest and most interesting trips was to Europe in 2001.  We visited Italy, Switzerland, France, Scotland, Ireland and England.  Each stop was new and had different encounters waiting for us.  We used so many methods of transportation on that trip: airplane, bus, boat, monorail, Tube, and walking.  I love how I would think something about a stop or city and then be proven completely wrong when visiting the place.

My Mom is a great travel buddy who ready for anything.  She and I are prepared, with multiple plans for any event.  We think alike and in general get along with each other really well.  She has an adventurous spirit is always up for a trip or an outing.  She likes to see all kinds venues.  Different types of places and cultures.  She has introduced me to so many different ideas and things.

We have also started adding our children into these trips.  They add a lot of excitement to them and we began encouraging that sense of adventure in them.  It is so fun to see your children discover something for the first time.  It is also heartwarming to see them feel like some places are home like Walt Disney World, Panama City Beach or Winter Park.  They know where they and remember things from previous trips.  Recently, my son, who is ten now, said,” Mom, remember that trip we went on with Grandy where we dressed like pirates?  I really loved that trip and am glad you put all of that work into it.”  Mom heart melted.

I love that my Mom made those special memories and moments with me and that we can now share them with my children.  These experiences are a great way to teach us how to think on the fly, adjust and adapt to the people and world around us.  I am so grateful for a Mom who has that adventurous nature and shared it with me.  I would be thrilled to help you build that spirit of adventure in your family.
