Cruising During Hurricane Season

3 November |Carrie Fulton

During the last week of September, I was on a cruise that was impacted due to Hurricane Ian.  Our trip was extended two days which sent us searching for damage reports, changing flights and updating transfers.

Here are some lessons I learned that we can potentially implement for your next cruise!

  1. Timing

  • Hurricane season begins in mid-August and goes through early November and the vast majority of delays or cancellations are a result of the embarkation port being in the line of the storm.
  • Once the ship is at sea, there will likely NOT be an impact on your cruise though you may have an itinerary change (e.g. a reordering of your ports of call) to avoid rough seas and itineraries of other ships in the area.
  • Rarely, cruises can be extended a day or two due to the storm; and if that's the case, the crew is there to help you keep safe (i.e. dramamine and adjusting routes) and the fun going (i.e. extra entertainment offerings).

  1. Flights

  • Flights can significantly change when there's a hurricane.  Flights can be delayed, cancelled and rebooked in a matter of seconds.  If you'll be on a ship, task someone you trust at home to navigate any changes that will be happening since that person will likely have more access to information that you will at times.

  • As always, book directly with your preferred carrier!  Third party platforms can offer lower pricing, but this is when they'll cost you more than you bargained for since they will charge you cancellation fees whereas carriers will not.  Direct booking of flights offers the most flexibility and truest value.
  • Know what airports are in the area nearby since they may have more flights available, and you can always use a ride share or taxi to get you where you need to be.

  1. Medications

  • Many travel with pill boxes rather than bottles, but it's important to ensure you have several extra days when you travel in general but especially when you're cruising.
  • If you need extra medications, they will have many popular and essential ones on board in the medical center.  You'll just need to show them either your original prescription bottle or screen shots of your prescription history if you use a pharmacy app.

  • Also be sure note the hours of the medical center on board because they are not open all the time.  Go early to make sure you get what you need!

  1. Travel Protection

  • As with any trip, Travel Protection is your best helper!
  • Be sure to pick the insurance that covers cancellations or delays due to severe weather or a hurricane which may not necessarily be the least expensive option.  But it's the best investment you can make!
  • Buy your travel insurance as soon as you book so you can get full coverage since many policies require you to have it 14-21 days before your cruise.

There's no need to fear the seas during hurricane season. If you have any fear, please reach out to me either on Facebook or through my email!
