ETIAS Overview

Travel processes and rules are constantly changing especially when it comes to traveling between countries as governments are constantly trying to enable tourism while also keeping both travelers and citizens safe.

The ETIAS, European Travel Information and Authorization System, is being created to do just that by adding an extra layer of security while also simplifying procedures.

Let's break it all down together to learn what this means for you if you're considering traveling to Europe in 2025 and after.

What is ETIAS?

The primary purpose of ETIAS is to strengthen security and minimize risks posed by travelers in the Schengen Area. This area is comprised of 26 European countries who have removed passport control at their mutual borders…think of travel between Portugal and Spain or France and Italy, etc. like we travel between states in the US mainland.

This system allows travelers to get authorization before they leave for their trip to these Schengen countries. It should cost about $8 US dollars per traveler, and it is NOT a visa! It’s more like a travel authorization form for short term trips up to 90 days.

Why is this happening?

By having travelers go through a background check, European authorities can identify security threats or risks before risky travelers reach their destinations. This proactive approach allows countries to better manage their boarder while maintaining the desired intent of the Schengen Agreement of not having passport control at each border crossing point.

How does ETIAS work?

  1. Online Application: Travelers need to fill out an online application form with personal details, travel itinerary, and information about their background, including criminal history.

  2. Background Checks: The provided information is cross-checked against various security databases, including Interpol and Europol. This helps authorities assess the risk posed by the traveler.

  3. Authorization Grant: In most cases, travelers will receive an approved ETIAS authorization via email within minutes. This authorization is electronically linked to the traveler's passport.

  4. Traveling: With an approved ETIAS, travelers can proceed with their journey to any Schengen country. Border control authorities will verify the ETIAS during the entry process.

Key Benefits of ETIAS:

  1. Enhanced Security: ETIAS helps identify potential security threats before they reach European borders, ensuring a safer travel environment for all.

  2. Efficiency: The online application process is quick and convenient, granting travelers access to multiple Schengen countries with a single authorization.

  3. Reciprocity: European citizens benefit from similar systems when traveling to countries like the United States and Canada, promoting a balanced approach to travel regulations.

Is ETIAS for Everyone?

ETIAS applies to travelers from visa-exempt countries, which means citizens of countries that currently do not require a visa to enter the Schengen Area. However, there are a few exceptions, such as citizens of EU and EFTA countries, who are exempt from the ETIAS requirement.

As of the writing of this newsletter in September 2023, the implementation of ETIAS is set to begin SOMETIME in 2025. We don’t have an exact date. However, I am keeping an eye on this, and I will notify all my current and future clients who will be impacted as soon as the process is finalized.
