Hotel Review: Sofitel, New York City
Christina Szewczuk1.8.18I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Sofitel in New York City. My mother and I were attending a performance of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at the Lyric Theatre so we wanted something classy and close to the Theatre District. The Sofitel’s location on 44th street between 5th & 6th Aves (about a block and a half off Times Square) was the perfect spot. We took a cab from Penn Station to the hotel. (About a $6-7 cab ride)
When we arrived at the Sofitel, it was only10:45 in the morning, so we figured we would have to leave our bags with the Bellman while we enjoyed the city until the room was ready. We were helped out of the cab and the doorman held open the big glass doors for us revealing the beautiful lobby of the hotel. There was a concierge desk to the left and the Bell Services desk to the right. A fireplace and plush seating were available for those waiting for rooms or transportation. As you continue through the lobby, you come upon a beautiful winding staircase and the check in desk is to your left.
We went to check in and requested the highest floor they had available for our standard room. The lady that checked us in, Demitra, was very pleasant and helpful. We were informed that there were rooms on lower floors available if we wanted to check in now, but if we wanted to wait, there was something available on floor 14. We decided to wait for the higher floor as we were heading out to lunch anyway. Demitra let us know where the restrooms were to freshen up and where we could get a bite to eat at the hotel’s restaurant, Gaby.We checked our bags and visited the restaurant. It was very nice with large televisions playing sports throughout and a seating area to the side. A green marble staircase leads you down into a small restaurant with tables and there is a wooden bar to the left with liquor shelves that reached to the top of its high ceilings. We did not eat here, although it looked like a nice place to dine.
We took the elevators down to the restrooms and discovered that this was also the location of the weight room. It was your typical weight room with equipment and mirrors, etc. It was clean and tidy with weights where they belonged and modern machines. The public rest area was nicely decorated with a sitting area and a separate area with mirrors and seats to check your make up or fix your hair.We left and enjoyed our day in the city and the show was phenomenal. Afterwards we headed back to the hotel to check out our room and get some sleep. Heading up to our room, as is typical in many city hotels, we needed to use our room key to access the elevator to reach floors with hotel rooms. We made our way to room 1416.As we entered the room there was soft classical music playing on the Bose clock radio. There was a nice bathroom to the right as you entered. When you open the French doors to the large bathroom, there is a sink with a mirror and toiletries as well as a hairdryer in a velvet pouch. There was a separate soaking tub and a large glass stall shower with a nice showerhead. It was very clean!
We headed down the short hallway and there was a bureau with a TV on top and a stocked mini-fridge. Continuing on, there was a table with two chairs, and side tables flanking a very soft, plush queen bed. A floor to ceiling mirrored closet containing robes and slippers made up the entire wall to the right. There was a safe for valuables and an iron/ironing board in the closet.Along the wall, above the table and chairs, was a large window but as we were in a standard room, we did not have much of a view. It wasn’t bad though! Only a few buildings and you could see people scurrying around the sidewalk and taxis coming and going along the road.As far as New York City hotel rooms go, this was just about the largest one I have seen for a standard room category. Overall, I would recommend the Sofitel. We had a nice stay there; the staff was delightful and our room was clean and comfortable.Check out the video of my room tour, available on YouTube, below.
