It’s a “Marvel”-ous Time at Disney’s California Adventure!

Do you have a Marvel fan in your house? I definitely do, so a highlight of our latest visit to Disneyland Park included meeting some of the Marvel characters and riding “Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout” in California Adventure theme park.

First of all, Mission: Breakout is a re-imagining of the Tower of Terror ride, but to be honest, I loved this version even more than the original! Everything has a story at Disney, and this ride’s story is that The Collector has captured the Guardians, including Gamora, Star-Lord, Drax, Groot, and Rocket. But of course, Rocket has escaped and is plotting a way to rescue all of his friends. That’s where you come in. On the ride, he needs your access to get in to the laboratory, and he gains that access when you put your hands in the air. Mayhem ensues and the classic drop ride you love moves on from there. It’s so much fun! Keep in mind, this ride has a 40” minimum height requirement.

We met Groot at the exit of Mission: Breakout. He was off to the right as we exited and was a silent but fun character. He really is pretty tall – my husband barely came up to his elbow! Groot was happy to pose however we wanted him to, and there was virtually no line to meet him.

At the opposite end of Hollywood Land from Mission: Breakout is where most of the Marvel characters have their meet and greet areas.  Captain America and Spider-Man were off saving the world on the day we visited, but we were very excited to meet Black Panther and Captain Marvel!

Black Panther was guarded by a member of the Dora Milaje, rumored to be fierce protectors of King T’Challa, but we found her very personable and even somewhat friendly. His majesty gave us lessons in the proper way to signal “Wakanda Forever,” and was genuinely curious about where we were from. He took his time talking to us, although as you can imagine, the line to meet him was fairly long.

Later in the day, we were able to meet Carol Danvers, Captain Marvel herself, in front of her jet. Since my husband was also a military pilot, they had lots to discuss. She signed her autograph for the kids, and was really nice to chat with for a few minutes.

Later in 2021, Disney has announced the all-new Avengers Campus, which will feature a new Spider-Man ride: Web Slingers, as well as the Avengers Headquarters and the Sanctum, where Dr. Strange has removed the cloaking spells and will allow guests to venture inside for the first time. I’m really excited to head back to Disneyland once it re-opens and see these attractions for myself!
