Recommended Cozumel Dive Sites - For Experienced Divers

In my last blog I talked about sites that where good for beginner Divers, here I am going to talk about my top 3 sites for experienced divers. If you are an experienced diver and love to take underwater photographs, then Cozumel will not disappoint. The drift dives alone will have you in awe. There are so many walls and swim-throughs that are just spectacular. No matter how many incredible places you have dived before, Cozumel will quickly land on top of your list for diving.

Picking the right dive shop is one of the most important parts of diving in Cozumel. Being an experienced diver, you want to stay away from the “cattle dive” boats as I call them. Make sure your dive shop has fast boats - These tend to take 4 to 5 couples at a time and have 1 to 2 dive masters on board. This makes for a much better dive experience. We all remember what we were like when we first started diving - run out of air very fast, no buoyancy skills, no dive educate.  Make sure you talk to your dive shop and let them know you don’t want to be diving with beginners. Being an experienced diver means that you know how to have a conversation with your divemaster what about what you see and experience on each dive. Then he or she will tailor your Cozumel divers accordingly.  As your personal travel planner these are things, I will make sure to know and help you pick the right dive shop for your needs.

  PUNTA TUNICH

(Depth: 50′ – 130′)
Cozumel is famous for the drift dives around the island, and Punta Tunich is one of the best. Stunning coral overhangs, sea fans, whips, sponges, snapper, and more abound along this swift sand dune.

  COLOMBIA WALL

(Depth: 60′ – 90′)
Looking for stunning cave, tunnel and cavern systems? Colombia Wall is a perfect Cozumel diving site to visit. The wall itself is over 30 meters high. Experienced divers can experience giant coral pillars, some over 20 meters tall. Large barracuda are often seen here, as well as large sea turtles, eagle rays, and beautiful reef fish. Keep your eyes open for the Blue Tang, also known as surgeon-fish, with their scalpel-sharp tails. The shallows of this site are perfect for new underwater photographers to practice capturing stunning images.

  SANTA ROSA WALL

(Depth: 50′ – 130′)
Santa Rosa Wall is one of the most popular deep dive sites. The spectacular wall begins at around 65 feet and quickly drops deeper into the blue. It is easy to understand why the Santa Rosa Wall is so famous. With endless delights on offer like enormous sponges, caves, overhangs, swim-through tunnels, colorful fans, and beds of tunicates, you may never want to surface. You’ll be captivated by the large sea life here as well. Massive sea turtles, eagle rays, grouper, and sharks have been regularly seen. This dive site is an intermediate level site as the currents can be strong.

There are many more great dive sites to see but these are my top 3. I have dived them more times than I can count and never get tired of them. So. when you are ready to take your next adventure, I would love to help you plan it out. I have made many friends on the island over the years and know great dive shops that will come to your resort and pick you up, as well as what resorts work best for divers also.  (Things to consider: Do they have dunk tanks to clean your equipment in after your dive? Or are you stuck taking back to your room and cleaning it in your shower? No fun - and I have done that a few times.
