Sea Glass Beach

Have you ever found sea glass when walking along the beach? While the most common colors are clear, brown and green, maybe you’ve been lucky enough to find blue, red or purple? Sea glass is often a fun souvenir from various beaches visited.

While you may be lucky enough to find a piece or two of smoothed over glass, there is a beach in Bermuda where you will find literally thousands of pieces of glass washed up along the shore. Called Glass Beach, it’s less than a mile from the cruise port in Kings Wharf. During a recent sailing on the Disney Magic booked on a travel agent rate, my teens and I had a few hours on our second Bermuda day and decided to explore Glass Beach. Bermuda is a great island. Ships typically dock overnight which is a different experience than most other itineraries. You’ll have the ability to try out more than one area/excursion, etc.

We paid $10 for a taxi to the beach (since we didn’t know where it was exactly). Our taxi dropped us off at a nondescript grassy area with a set of steep stairs and a sign indicating that we were at the correct stop and also reminding us that the taking of glass is prohibited and could involve hefty fines.

For the sea glass lover that my daughter is, she was in heaven! It sounded like wind chimes hearing the waves crashing mixed in with the glass being moved. It’s a very small area but such a wonder! To the left of the stairs, there was an additional beachy area that was mostly sandy. In total, we spent about an hour at Glass Beach. The kids played in the water, climbed on the rocks and we took many photographs. We collected the rare colors of glass for pictures and then threw each piece back in the water to someday wash up again. We waited for a few minutes to see if a taxi came by (several other families had also been dropped off at the beach) and eventually walked back to the ship. There is one main road on this part of the island and it was a straight (and scenic) shot back to our ship.

I would love to help your family plan a trip to Bermuda so you can experience this same beach! I can be reached at Leslie@wishesfamilytravel.com.
