While hotels are generally safe, there are always ways to stay safer particularly if you're traveling alone. Here are ways to protect yourself wherever you are:
- Avoid the Ground Floor
The ground floor is convenient for you but also those who would want to look in your room or break in. Request a higher floor unless it's absolutely necessary to be on the ground floor.
- Check Your Room
When entering your room for the first time, prop your door open while you take a look around. Check any places someone could hide including behind the shower curtain, under the desk, closets and behind curtains. Leaving the door open allows you to get out faster as well as allows for others to hear you should you need to call for help.
- Check the Phone
Connectivity with your mobile device can be less than stellar in hotels. Be sure to check to make sure your room phone(s) work so you can know calls will get to the front desk if necessary.
- Put Your Suitcase at the Door
Don't just put it by the door but put your suitcase in FRONT of the door on the side your locks are located. This prevents anyone trying to get to your room lock from under the door. Should someone be able to get to the locks the luggage will also create a noise to alert you up for anyone trying to get in your room.
- Leave Your TV On
Generally, I like to conserve energy. But when you're heading out of your room at a hotel, it's a good idea to leave the TV on so those who may be considering getting into your room will think you're in there. The presence of a person is one of the biggest deterrents for thieves.
