Traveling with a Large Family to Disney World

By: Alaina GossTraveling to Walt Disney World is indeed magical, however, accommodations for a family of six are quite limited. Where can we stay with three, rowdy boys (ages 5, 7, & 10), along with a super prissy girl (age 7),  on a budget, that all of the children would enjoy? Well, I have discovered the hidden gem! The Cabins at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground!Upon arriving at the resort, it was as if we had entered an old town in the Wild West, complete will horses and all. Of course we were greeted with a smile in true Disney style, and given a map of the property. When we saw our cabin, my first thought was, “Yea, front row parking!”We were able to unload our entire luggage in minutes, and explore the cabin. We were, to say the least, pleasantly surprised. Our cabin was surprisingly spacious, and functional. Each of the cabins include:

  • Alarm Clock
  • AC/Heat
  • Charcoal Grill
  • Coffee Maker & Setup
  • Crib: Pack 'N Play
  • Dining Table & Chairs
  • Driveway (one car only)
  • Hair Dryer
  • In-Room Safe
  • Iron and Ironing Board
  • Kitchen
    • Full-size Refrigerator
    • Microwave
    • Stove
    • Oven
    • Toaster
    • Blender
    • Dishwasher
    • Plates
    • Flatware
    • Glasses
    • Cookware
    • Sink
  • Living Room Area
    • Patio
    • Picnic Table
    • Telephone
    • Television (ABC, Disney Channel, ESPN & more)
    • Vanity Area
    • DVD Player
    • Voice Mail
    • Wireless Internet (per the Disney site).

I should also mention that you can have groceries delivered to your cabin!! Pretty awesome, huh? Here are some pictures of the kids enjoying the cabin:My little guy, Pearson, clearing enjoying himself, but don’t you see the mischief in his sweet, little face? Here are my other 2 boys, Cole & Asher….Ignore the one on the left’s hair. You know that age where you don’t want a haircut? Well, this is the product of stubbornness. ;)Lillie ensuring she can still flip and cartwheel all throughout the cabin. ;)A picture of all four children, in front of the Murphy bed.

Now that you have a brief description of the cabin, how are the sleeping accommodations? Well, every cabin has a full sized Murphy bed (in the living area, and is perfectly camouflaged), a double bed and a set of bunk beds in the only bedroom. I have to admit when you are used to sleeping in a king sized bed, a double can be uncomfortable. However, it worked out! There was definitely more space than a regular room.

They can be loud and we do not have to worry about disturbing our neighbors! Whew! It really makes your vacation much more tolerable not having to say, “Shhhh. Stop jumping, I bet the people below us think you are coming through the ceiling!”Ok, so you have heard about the cabin, let’s explore the property!  The Trading Post, was a really neat ‘country store’ that will issue you a refillable mug (with the dining plan) that you can use, and refill in certain areas. They also had some groceries, and gifts.  We also really enjoyed The water launch (boat ride) to Magic Kingdom (this water launch will also take you to Disney's Wilderness Lodge Disney's Contemporary Resort)! It was much nicer than riding the Motorcoach everywhere.Dining options:

  • Restaurant & Lounge:
    • Trail's End Restaurant
    • Crockett's Tavern
  • Disney Dinner Shows
    • Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue
    • Mickey's Backyard BBQ
  • Picnic pavilion

We were unable to obtain reservations for Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue, but it is on the list for our next visit! Another hidden jewel at Disney’s Fort Wilderness and Campground is Chip & Dale Sing-along! This is a FREE event! You may bring your own marshmallows, and roast them for s’mores alongside the campfire, then enjoy a movie under the stars! It is a magnificent and wonderful activity for the children (and adults). These are just a few things offered at Disney’s Fort Wilderness and Campground. I, not only recommend this resort for large families, but for any size family! This moderate resort will wow you, and have you coming back for more!
