Epcot Behind the Seeds Tour

Looking to do something different to do at Walt Disney World parks? Tours are a great way to add a little something more to your visit. On my last visit, I booked the EPCOT Behind the Seeds Tour and am so glad I did.

The tour is located in Epcot Theme Park near the Soarin’ Around the World attraction.

Behind the Seeds is a “backstage” tour of the greenhouses found in the Land pavilion in Epcot’s Future World. Anyone with an interest in the natural sciences or gardening would be fascinated with the content.  You see the greenhouses on the Living with the Land boat ride and learn about how Disney grows its plants.

I recommend booking your tour 60 days before your trip. On the day of your tour, check into the tour desk -- located to the left of the Soarin’ ride -- about 15 mins before tour time. We had a small tour group of about 10 people.

The tour began in the Biological Control Lab, where our guide handed out receivers with ear buds so we could hear her better. She also let us know that is the only Disney tour you in which you can take photos behind the scenes. (I have been on others, and you CANNOT take photos.)

Next, we got a lesson in Integrated Pest Management. At  EPCOT, the Land pavilion is eliminating pests with natural predators instead of using harmful and toxic pesticides. We learned about these pesky insects from our tour guide, then watched video clips of these pests at work damaging the plants.

We visited four greenhouses and the fish farm during the tour, while our guide explained some of the techniques used at the facility.

I was amazed at how much I learned in this 60-minute tour. I really appreciated the pace, which was brisk without feeling rushed. I also loved the sensory experience of the tour; not only did we see and listen, but we also touched, smelled, and even tasted! We sampled cucumbers grown right in the greenhouses!

Fun fact. Did you know the produce grown at the Land pavilion is served at several of the restaurants around EPCOT? Like most other things at Disney, some of their produce is also Mickey-shaped thanks to special molds. While tasting the cucumbers, guests get a chance to see those Mickey molds and pictures of the Mickey shaped cucumber slices as well.

Overall, I was blown away by the quality of the Behind the Seeds tour and felt like it offered excellent value for the price. Behind the Seeds is one experience that you won’t want to miss! Rain or shine, Behind the Seeds is something that you can experience in any weather.
