Gaslamp Breakfast Company: A Must Do Breakfast Experience!
October 8, 2020
I got the chance to head back to San Diego (one of my favorites!) and hang out in the Gaslamp District for a few days this past January. In the morning, I went looking for some breakfast and I came across this new place, The Gaslamp Breakfast Company. They had just opened up about a month earlier and so I decided to give it a try. Not only was I not disappointed, I had to go back the next day to try something else!
Located on the corner at 551 J Street in the heart of the Gaslamp, sits this cool eclectic spot. The pink neon sign touting the name “Gaslamp Breakfast Company” makes it hard to miss. There is some outside seating and tables inside, but I opted to sit at the bar. The décor inside is a chic mismatched industrial style with a touch of glam that gives off an upscale vibe. When you walk in, the first thing you see is the bar with its pink neon sign and bright pink stools. There is a comfortable spot to wait for a table with some merchandise for purchase. Seating options other than the bar are booths, tables, and towards the back sit some larger tables against an eye-catching abstract mural. They have enough space for groups so if you’re doing a girls weekend, bachelor/bachelorette party or even a shower, this would be a great option. The hours are limited to morning and afternoon, so make sure to get there earlier in the day so you don’t miss out.
As I sat down and ordered my mimosa, I noticed the bar tools are all rose gold! Nice touch… Looking at the menu, I realized I was going to have a tough time figuring out what to get! They had options like s’mores waffles, crème brulee French toast, tiramisu pancakes, and various omelets. I decided to live dangerously and try something off the “Specialties Menu”, the Shrimp Enmoladas. This dish is described as made of “black mole, monteray jack, crema, cilantro, queso fresco, pickled red onions and two eggs, any style.” I went for the poached eggs on mine. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but wow – the flavor combination, the large shrimp, the perfectly cooked eggs… it ended up being the best breakfast I have had in years. Maybe ever. It was that good! It is hard to describe the unique carnival of flavors that made this dish so delectable. You’ll have to try it for yourself.
I knew I must go back the next day and try some of those crazy pancakes. Or maybe the waffles… French toast??? Luckily for me, there was this thing called a “Breakfast Co. Flight” where you were able to choose 1 waffle, 1 French toast and 1 pancake. Any flavors! I was sold… So the next morning I went back and got a Breakfast Flight! (Along with another mimosa, because: vacation.) I went with the Banana Bread Pancake, the Mashed Potato Waffle, and The Crème Brulee French Toast. The Banana Bread Pancake came with caramelized bananas, walnuts and powdered sugar sprinkled atop a pat of butter. The Mashed Potato was like a loaded baked potato! Made of a scoop of mashed potatoes, it had a creamy texture with this awesome cheesy gravy on top along with bits of sausage and some scallions for added flavor. Last, the Crème Brulee French toast was a traditional piece of French toast with assorted berries atop a sweet creamy sauce. I couldn’t even tell you which one was best. They were all so delicious.
Overall, I loved this place and highly recommend stopping in for a bite. The food was fabulous and nicely plated, the staff was welcoming and the vibe was super cool. I can’t wait to go back here again soon and have another amazing meal. When you’re in the area, make sure to check out this place for breakfast or brunch!
