Great Stirrup Cay and Cabana
By: Sari PalmeriWhen we were on the Norwegian Breakaway we were fortunate to go to their private island, Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas. We were also fortunate to get a cabana and share it with friends.Great Stirrup Cay is a tender island. This means that the ship docks in the water and you take boats to get to their private island. Once we got to the island we could either take a tram or walk to the cabana. We chose to take the tram and our friends walked because they had their 18 month old in a stroller and thought it would be easier. We were not on the same boat to the island so we arrived at different times. When we arrived at the cabana we were given waters and a menu because the cabana came with a food credit and water floats. We chose shrimp cocktail and a fruit platter and it was plenty for all of us as an appetizer and snack. We rented a large cabana which held 8 people. There was a table with chairs and lounge chairs so we had plenty of seating, especially because with kids they wanted to be in the sand and playing. We never felt cramped with all of us and technically we were 9 because one child was 18 months old.We ate at the BBQ and brought the food back to our cabana. There were hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, salad, corn on the cob, fresh fruit, cookies, cakes and much more. Before this trip I had never had fresh chunks of coconut and I couldn’t get enough of it. Everyone loved it!The kids loved playing in the sand and going in the water. We took them with the water floats to a lagoon area. It was a little bit of a walk for the adults carrying the rafts, but it was definitely worth it. Everyone had so much fun! It was calm so the kids were having a blast playing, on and off the rafts. The kids were making sand art or attempting it! I give them an A for effort and an A for enjoying and being kids! While on Norwegian Cruise Lines private island there are many things to do. You can go on one of many shore excursions, including parasailing, a kayak tour, a wave runner tour, and many more. You can go down the Hippo Water Slide which is 40 feet high and 175 feet long. The is the world’s largest inflatable water slide and does have an additional fee. The cabana was definitely worth it and I will definitely be renting one again the next time we visit Great Stirrup Cay! We booked ours before the trip and didn’t have any problem securing one. I definitely recommend booking early if you want a cabana. There could be availability when you are onboard, but it is recommended to book as soon as possible. If you’d like more information on Norwegian Cruise Line, their private island and their cabanas please contact me at sari@wishesfamilytravel.com
